FOX13’s Jeremy Pierre got his hands on the crime analysis for Waterview Apartments and the area around it for the last five years.

It shows that police have responded to hundreds of calls about violent crimes at the apartments in the last five years, including two murders in the last six months.

Family members of people who have become victims of violent crimes at Waterview Apartments said its best for the complex to be shut down.

“There is too many people getting killed over there. You all have some nice apartments, but you’re not doing your work,” Catherine Ayers said.

FOX13’s Jeremy Pierre spoke with Catherine Ayers earlier this year after a gunman killed her sister while she moved into her new apartment at Waterview.

According to these numbers from the Memphis Police Department, between 2015 and early 2020 officers responded to more than 1,000 calls at the complex.

Jeremy discovered within that time frame officers took 2,863 reports from the dozens of businesses, and hundreds of homes within a half-mile of the Waterview Apartments.

Nearly 40& of the reports taken came from the Waterview Apartments.

“Not safe at all. They are dangerous. I wouldn’t recommend anyone moving in there,” Former attorney Aaron Neglia said.

Between January, 1, 2015, and February 6 of this year there have been 1,070 crimes reported at the complex.

That includes 106 reports of violent crimes, including four homicides and more than 400 thefts and home burglary reports.

Former attorney Aaron Neglia represents two families that have lost loved ones to violence in the apartments.

“Too many people are being injured or damaged in some way, and the apartment complex does not care,” Neglia said.

Jeremy walked the property several times within the last two months and saw electric gates that didn’t close and several lights that didn’t work.

On multiple occasions a security guard asked us to leave after we had been there for more than three hours.

A Maryland-based company bought the complex in 2017.

Neglia said the property lacks proper security to protect residents.

“Crimes occur when criminals know the cameras are not working or no one is watching them. Gates are down and anyone can go as they please and when there are no lights at night,” Neglia said.

Earlier this year Neglia filed federal lawsuits against the owner of the apartment complex on behalf of the two families he’s representing citing negligence of proper security to protect residents.

We have reached out to the parent company for Waterview Apartments for comment several times, but our calls have not been returned.
